Are the vehicles from Wonder Island new?
We take great care to maintain a new and modern fleet, which is why all of our vehicles are purchased new and none are more than 2 years old.
How can I reserve a vehicle?
Select the dates, vehicle, and insurance options, and complete the payment process, with only the deposit or excess associated with the selected insurance remaining to be processed at pick-up. You can quickly reserve your vehicle on our website or, if you prefer, make your reservation through bookings@wonderislands.com.
Is payment made 100% at the time of reservation? Is a credit card mandatory?
It is the easiest method, yes. In addition to the Credit Card, online payment for the reservation can also be made by Multibanco Reference, MB Way and PayPal, or by bank transfer for reservations made by email.
What is the difference between the two types of insurance?
Low Protection: It only covers damage caused by third parties, which must be duly proven. In addition, this insurance implies a deposit of €1500 when you pick up the car, which serves as a security deposit for the duration of your reservation.
Medium Protection: The medium protection is a fixed deposit of €700. If the car suffers any new damages, the driver will be charged up to €700. This insurance also includes Roadside Assistance, Interior Cleaning Service and a second driver as a gift.
Maximum Protection : The true meaning of traveling with peace of mind, this rate does not have any deposit or deductible and covers basically every possible damage is covered. Altough whells and tyres are not covered, you can add it as an extra for full coverage. Naturally, damages done by negligence are not covered by any insurance.
Negligences to avoid:
- Fuel change;
- Damage to the interior of the vehicle;
- Damaged clutch or any other driving situation;
- Scraping the sheet metal of cars with sensors and a rear camera;
- Inability to remove the car from a certain place
- Misuse of the vehicle
- The use of the car is not premitted in dirt roads
These negligences are not tolerated even if you have Maximum Protection Insurance and you will be charged depending on the damage or situation.
How does the deposit work? Is a credit card mandatory?
At the time of vehicle pick-up, a temporary deposit is made in the amount of €1500 (depending on the selected insurance), made by credit card and returned to you upon delivery of the vehicle provided that no damages are present. Depending on the banking institution, the amount may take up to 30 days to become available again after Wonder Island cancels the credit authorization. It is important to note that the deposit amount is only retained during the rental and is never in the possession of Wonder Island.
If there are damages caused, our team will assess them: if the damages exceed the deposit amount, you will need to pay the remaining amount. If the damages are less than the deposit amount, we will return the difference between the deposit amount and the damages caused. More details can be found in the questions below.
How far in advance can I cancel a reservation?
You can cancel your reservation at any time, but we only guarantee a refund for cancellations made 48 hours in advance. For complete transparency, Wonder Island refunds the full amount minus the fees charged by the bank for the initial transaction.
Low Protection and Medium Protection do not include the refund request.
Can anyone drive the vehicle?
No, the personal information you provide in the reservation is assumed to be the driver for the contract. If this is not the case, you must inform us by emailing bookings@wonderislands.com and sending the necessary documents for the designated driver. It is important to note that to avoid this restriction, you can add a second driver to the reservation or opt for Total Insurance.
What is the age to rent a vehicle at Wonder Island?
To be able to reserve and drive one of our vehicles, you must be 19 years old or have at least one year of driving license, be aware that drivers under the age of 22 will be charged an extra fee of 10€ per day to rent, drivers older than 65 years cannot rent a car.
What information will I receive after the reservation?

What should I do upon arrival at Ponta Delgada airport?
Head to Parking Lot No. 5, which is immediately to your right at the airport exit gate. There you will find a Wonder Island employee ready to greet you, and after a free 2-minute transfer to our facilities, you will be next to your vehicle. If you have any difficulty, please contact (+351) 963 703 702.
What should I do if my flight is delayed?
As soon as you have this information, you should call or send an SMS to (+351) 963 703 702. Alternatively, you can send us an email at bookings@wonderislands.com. We just ask that you include your name or booking number in your message.
What documents do I need to pick up the vehicle?
For vehicle pick-up, we only require that you present your personal identification document and driver’s license. The process will be quick and efficient as we want you to be exploring the island as soon as possible.
Make normal and prudent use of the vehicle, complying with the Law, especially the Highway Code, ensuring that the vehicle is locked in a safe place when not in use, not leaving the documents in it, without prejudice to them. always be carrying, and placing the appropriate fuel;
Are there any limits on kilometers?
No, we want you to experience as much of our island as possible, so it doesn’t make sense to limit your exploration. Additionally, our vehicles are new and modern so you can travel any distance in total safety and comfort.
What do I do if I am stopped by authorities while driving a Wonder Island vehicle?
Be cooperative with our authorities and present the requested documents, including your identification documents, driver’s license, and the Wonder Island rental contract, which you will find in the glove compartment of the vehicle. Please note that the loss of vehicle keys and/or documents will incur a minimum fee of 350€.
The customer is naturally responsible for paying all traffic and/or parking fines that occur during the rental. If the customer has an unpaid fine during the rental, they will be contacted by the authorities for payment and an administration fee of €35 will be charged.
Does Wonder Island provide roadside assistance? What should I do if I need support?
Whether it’s a flat tire or a road accident, we’re here for you. After a quick evaluation by our team over the phone, we’ll send assistance to the location as soon as possible and even, if necessary, a replacement vehicle so you can continue your journey quickly. Please note that this service is included free of charge in Total Insurance, whilst in Basic Insurance it can be added as an extra. What should you do? After ensuring that you are parked in a safe place and have set up the safety triangle, contact us through the number (+351) 963 703 702. Provide us with the license plate of the vehicle and explain the situation and location, sharing the location. Wonder Island will take care of the rest.
I have Basic Insurance and caused damage to the vehicle. Do I have to pay anything?
This basic insurance option only covers damage caused by third parties, which must be properly documented. If the damage was caused by you, you will naturally have to take responsibility for it when returning the vehicle.
How do I return my vehicle at the end of the rental?
At the end of your trip, look for the QR code on your keychain with the location of our facilities so you can quickly find us and be transported back to the airport via our free transfer service. Alternatively, you can find our address at Rua Domingues Dias Machado Warehouse 9, 9500-682 Ponta Delgada.
Is it mandatory to wash the vehicle before returning it?
Don’t worry about it, washing the vehicle is included in your rental. We ask for care in its use, especially the interior, but we want you to enjoy your trip without this concern at the time of return. Only in excessive cases considered negligent soiling, a cleaning fee of €35 to 100€ may be applied.
Do I need to fill up the car’s tank before returning it?
Since fuel consumption is the driver’s responsibility, the vehicle must be returned with a full tank, as it was received initially. If you prefer not to do this, you can choose to make a one-time payment equivalent to the full tank at drop-off.
How do I get my deposit back?
When you return the vehicle at the end of your rental, we assess it and, if there are no damages to the vehicle, we immediately order the bank to return your deposit. If there are damages to the interior or exterior of the vehicle, we proceed according to the insurance option you chose, so we always recommend Total Insurance for a worry-free trip.
